Subject: Folger Library Exhibition & Catalogue: The First Folio
[Here's the first of several announcements circulated in Vancouver
which might be of interest to SHAKSPEReans in general. KS]
an exhibition and catalogue by Peter W.M. Blayney
During his work on an exhibition at the Folger Shakespeare Library,
Peter W.M. Blayney found new information about the original price of the
First Folio and evidence that at least one early bookseller rented a copy to
customers. He also discovered several leaves from a copy in which *Hamlet*
was marked for use as a prompt-book by a London theater company in the
1670s. His investigations are detailed in the exhibition catalogue.
The amply illustrated, 46-page catalogue takes the reader from initial
negotiations between Shakespeare's fellow actors and the printers to changes in
individual copies as they passed through the hands of binders, booksellers, and
owners. It examines the work of individual compositors (one of them a
teenage apprentice) and explores how work on *Troilus and Cressida* was
started, abandoned, then reinstated at the last minute in another part of
the book.
The companion exhibit, "The First Folio of Shakespeare," will be on
view at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., from April 1
until September 21. Most of the 24 copies and four fragments of the First
Folio will be shown publicly for the first time. They will include the
copy prized most by library founder Henry Clay Folger -- a presentation copy
from printer William Jaggard to his friend Augustine Vincent, whose book had
accompanied Shakespeare's comedies through the press.
The catalogue is available for $6.95, plus $2.50 first class postage and
handling. To order send a check [sic] made payable to the Folger Library to:
