The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 19.0470 Friday, 15 August 2008 From: Hardy M. Cook <editor@shaksper.net> Date: Friday, August 15, 2008 Subject: Google Alerts: Shakespeare These past few days I have been receiving many interesting links from my Google News Alerts for Shakespeare. On Thursday, evening, I received this: http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/the_tls/article4530781.ece Reprinting a story from close to thirty years earlier: Times Online - UK Professor Schoenbaum tells us, in an almost Gibbonian phrase, that the idea of his book came to him on September 1, 1964. in the church where Shakespeare . . . A few hours ago, I received this: http://www.bbcamerica.com/content/23/anglophenia.jsp?bc_id=1208 with links to this story about Dr. Who knock off, Torchwood: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/tv/article1560118.ece The "third season" of Torchwood is looking to be a major event: it will air over five nights on the flagship BBC1, not BBC2, in the UK. ... and to this piece on 'Tennant' effect hits Stratford: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/coventry_warwickshire/7556942.stm by Sarah Portlock BBC News, Warwickshire Stratford-upon-Avon, the Warwickshire birthplace of William Shakespeare, has suffered a difficult time in recent years. Foot-and-mouth disease, the slowdown in US tourists after 9/11, flooding and building work at the Royal Shakespeare Company's main theatre have all led to fears of doom and gloom for the town's tourist industry. Last month Shakespearience, a tourist attraction devoted to Shakespeare, called in the administrators blaming the credit crunch, a lack of overseas visitors and disruption caused by the redevelopment. Despite this the town's streets have remained busy and visitors, mostly from the UK, have been flocking in. And since the opening of the Royal Shakespeare Company's latest production of Hamlet, the town could be said to be enjoying what might be called the "David Tennant effect". And then today I received this: Google News Alert for: Shakespeare Firing of Arden Editor Causes Tempest in Shakespeare Studies Chronicle of Higher Education (subscription) - USA By JENNIFER HOWARD The publisher of the eminent Arden Shakespeare collection has sent a shock wave through the ranks of Shakespeare scholars by terminating ... http://chronicle.com/daily/2008/08/4252n.htm a story, I will discuss in the next SHAKSPER digest. _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
