If you have intentions that are unconscious, then you must be conscious of them to know that they are unconscious, which makes them conscious. Of course, there is good evidence that we are not fully conscious of all our intentions and drives. Perhaps I was careless with that phrase, but it seems to me that if you can desire something unconsciously, for example, then you might be said to intend unconsciously to fulfill that desire. The point is that it is sometimes possible, or so I and many others have found, to see the working of an author's unconscious in a work, as it is possible to see the working of anyone's unconscious in what they say and do. But let's not keep boring Hardy. He's eager for substantive discussion, of the kind the round table will no doubt offer.
