The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 19.0217 Friday, 11 April 2008 From: Tom Bishop <t.bishop@auckland.ac.nz> Date: Friday, 11 Apr 2008 11:44:16 +1200 Subject: G.K Hunter Dear SHAKSPEReans, I have this morning received the sad news that George K. Hunter has died. He was Emeritus Professor of English at Yale, retired for some years. Professor Hunter was the author or editor of numerous well- known and important books on Shakespeare and the English Renaissance, including a groundbreaking book on John Lyly: the Humanist as Courtier, the magisterial OHEL volume on The Age of Shakespeare, a book on Paradise Lost, a volume of critical essays, Dramatic identities and cultural tradition, and editions of plays by Lyly, Webster, Marston, and Shakespeare. His British Academy lecture on "Othello and colour prejudice" of 1967 remains very well known and frequently cited. Those who met George will recall his wide learning, genial humour, and quick wit. Those who, like me, were taught or supervised by him, will add to these his scholarly generosity and patience, and his sharp eye. Shakespeare studies is impoverished by his loss.
