SHAKSPER 2008: Solid Flesh Once More
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@SHAKSPER.NET) Date: 04/02/08
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 19.02034 Wednesday, 2 April 2008 From: David Bishop <dvbishop@mindspring.com> Date: Saturday, 29 Mar 2008 21:40:27 -0400 Subject: 19.0192 Solid Flesh Once More Comment: Re: SHK 19.0192 Solid Flesh Once More While agreeing with Steve Roth that words can have multiple meanings--as in puns, for example--I still like to know what multiple meanings a critic believes they might have, in a particular case, and what that critic means by having a meaning. Steve catches a little excessive severity in my tone, and pleads not guilty of the usual Theoretical sins. I'm happy to take his advice, and relax a little. But I still wonder, in the midst of this delightful gathering of meanings, what you think is going on in the play, as opposed to, however enjoyably, and innocently, in your own head. Surely, not to be entirely Theoretical, you make that distinction, which involves recognizing the possibility that what I, or you, say is going on in the play could be significantly, if not absolutely, off the mark. For example, the idea that Hamlet is young does not seem to agree with my own view, that the play is, in part, the story of Hamlet's coming of age. He ages rapidly, in the short course of the play, but age he does. At least as I see it.
