It's one of the few video/film productions where various nuances of each word are taken into consideration-instead of just read/memorized (BBC), or done with excessive melodrama (Branagh). CS has really perfected an insane, yet intelligent Hamlet. I've seen Russell-Beale and Day-Lewis and a bunch of Americans since, but nothing equaled the impact of that one. Even the Reynaldo was fascinating. The 1972 NYSF Hamlet was memorable, but it was James Earl Jones as Claudius who most impressed me there. G.L. Olwen Terris Senior Researcher, Shakespeare Project British Universities Film and Video Council [4]----------------------------------------------------------------- From: Thomas M. Lahey <tlahe@lahey.com> Date: Monday, 31 Mar 2008 23:18:41 -0700 Subject: The Best Hamlet With two friends, I was privileged to see Mark Rylance become Hamlet for a couple of hours at the Barbican (directed by Ron Daniels) sometime after 21 Sept 1989 and before 17 March 1990. The three of us sat in different areas, meeting after the performance for a snack. As we discussed the play, we were separately, 3 or so feet off the ground. In my naivete, I thought that EVERY RSC performance was this special, so I decided as a life goal to see every Shakespeare play performed by the RSC. Well, another life goal not achieved (yet), but a learning experience, to wit: On occasion, something magic happens when the audience and performers share an evening and the stars are aligned. I am happy to tell you these special evenings have happened occasionally since then, but not as frequently as I would like. May these events happen to you, Tom _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
