From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@SHAKSPER.NET) Date: 04/02/08
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 19.0197 Wednesday, 2 April 2008 From: Robert Bearman <bearman452@btinternet.com> Date: Tuesday, 1 Apr 2008 17:47:34 +0100 Subject: Study Day in Stratford SHAKSPEReans may be interested in a study day, 'Much Ado about Very Little?' to be held at the Shakespeare Centre in Stratford-upon-Avon on 26 June 2008. Much has been written recently in support of the proposition that the young William Shakespeare was reared in a staunchly Catholic environment. However, this has not gone unchallenged and the purpose of this study day is to examine whether the historical evidence on which these claims are based can bear such an interpretation. Speakers will include Professor Stanley Wells, Dr Glyn Parry, Dr Michael Winstanley, T.M. McCoog, SJ, Dr Robert Bearman, and Dr Alison Shell who between them will discuss the likelihood of Shakespeare's sojourn in Catholic Lancashire; the recusancy (or not) of John Cottam, the Stratford schoolmaster; the authenticity of John Shakespeare's 'spiritual testament' and its links with Edmund Campion's mission to England; the religious climate in Stratford-upon-Avon during Shakespeare's formative years; and Shakespeare's reputation amongst the Catholic community both during his lifetime and later. Further information can be found on the Trust's website (www.shakespeare.org.uk) or telephone 01789 204016 Robert Bearman Email: bearman452@btinternet.com _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
