SHAKSPER 2007: Book Announcement: Eight Hamlets
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@SHAKSPER.NET) Date: 11/13/07
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 18.0763 Tuesday, 13 November 2007 From: David Bishop <dvbishop@mindspring.com> Date: Friday, 9 Nov 2007 15:33:18 -0500 Subject: Eight Hamlets If anyone on this list has any interest, my book, Eight Hamlets, is now available from lulu.com (pb:$14.95+shipping; download:$1.00). In another month or so it should be up at Amazon. Here is the jacket copy: The study of the humanities in our universities cries out for revolutionary change. One rigorously intuitive, self-aware, determinedly honest graduate student could start the ball rolling. This book should supply some ammunition. Pickled in jargon and preaching to the choir, so-called Theory floats free of practice. Specialists enmeshed in esoteric superfluities fiddle with abandon while Rome burns. Literature becomes the alleged possession of an ever-shrinking coterie, until it dries up and blows away. To bring the news of great art, and thought, to the public-and first of all to students-should be the central purpose of education. To bring great works to life, to show their vital relevance to our brief term on earth, to excite, to challenge, to expand the mind, touch the heart and feed the soul, to connect with other human beings, close to home and at the ends of the earth: this is progress, and progress is possible. This book proposes a direction of progress in the understanding of Hamlet, by examining the interpretations of Bradley, Goddard, Jenkins, Cavell, Bloom, Greenblatt and Garber. The eighth Hamlet, the point of view I compare with the others', is mine.
