SHAKSPER 2007: Lear and Job
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@SHAKSPER.NET) Date: 11/13/07
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 18.0762 Tuesday, 13 November 2007 From: Hannibal Hamlin <hamlin.22@osu.edu> Date: Friday, 09 Nov 2007 09:41:26 -0500 Subject: Lear and Job Dear Shakespeareans, Here is a question that seems ideal for the list: What is the earliest printed reference to a relationship between King Lear and the Book of Job (even broadly speaking -- i.e., X is like or reminds one of Y)? This has become fairly commonplace (see, for instance, Steven Marx or Kenneth Gross or various editions), and it goes back at least to Holloway's Story of the Night (1961) and Wilson Knight's Wheel of Fire (1949). Is it a 20th century, even post-WWII idea, though, or does it go back further? I'm hunting myself (not entirely lazy!), but I thought I'd see if this rang any bells with list-readers. Many thanks, Hannibal Hamlin The Ohio State University Book Review Editor and Associate Editor, Reformation _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
