The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 18.0749 Tuesday, 6 November 2007 From: Larry Weiss <larry@lweiss.net> Date: Thursday, 01 Nov 2007 13:32:47 -0500 Subject: 18.0735 The Will Comment: Re: SHK 18.0735 The Will >Does anybody think it is possible that the text of the >Last Will and Testament is Shakespeare's handwriting? Charles Hamilton certainly thought so and even concluded that Shakespeare had suffered a stroke between the initial composition and the revisions. I find this imaginative but unpersuasive. The will's context makes it highly improbable that it is anything other than a law clerk's or scrivener's copy. But, if you are interested, you can get a copy of Hamilton's book in which he contends that The Second Maiden's Tragedy in the lost Cardenio. [Editor's Note: Greenblatt presented what appears to be his travelling Cardenio show at the Blackfriars Conference. Afterwards, I asked Rebecca (high school freshman) what she thought of the paper. She responded, "I didn't understand ALL of it," to which I replied "Neither did about 97% of those present."] _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
