SHAKSPER 2007: What's in a Name?
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 01/09/07
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 18.0018 Tuesday, 9 January 2007 From: Hardy M. Cook <editor@shaksper.net> Date: Tuesday, January 09, 2007 Subject: What's in a Name? Dear SHAKSPEReans, I have a volunteer to be Guest Moderator of the first SHAKSPER Roundtable/Forum. In a short time, I will announce his name, the topic, the reading list, and the guidelines for how the Forum/Roundtable will be conducted. I find this prospect very exciting, and I hope the members of the list will too. In the interim, I am soliciting opinions about what to call this new feature so as to distinguish it from the ordinary discussions that take place on this listserv. I began by calling my idea Roundtable discussions, but I am wondering if Forum or some other designation might be more appropriate. What I am asking for now are recommendations for what to call these special discussions. If you have an idea, please send it to me. I will consider responses as private mail to me, study them, and in consultation with the SHAKSPER Advisory Board decide on a designation. At this time, I foresee these special discussions as operating in this manner. After a Guest Moderator (GM) has been selected, the GM will come up with a FOCUSED TOPIC of current academic interest to the discipline of Shakespeare or Early Modern Studies. The Guest Moderator will be responsible for initiating, moderating, directing, and concluding the discussions. The GM will determine a READING LIST of three to five items that will be announced at least two weeks before discussion begins. Anyone participating will be expected to be thoroughly familiar with these readings. Two weeks after TOPIC and the READING LIST are announced, the Guest Moderator will initiate the discussion with a question or a statement or however the GM might wish to start things going. Members who wish to participate will send responses that are clearly identified as belonging to the Forum/Roundtable discussion to me. I will forward those to GM, who will organize and comment on the week's submissions before suggesting the direction that discussions might take the following week. The GM will send this back to me on Sunday and I will format it for distribution on Tuesday. I will be taking care of ALL technical matters. The discussions will continue until the Guest Moderator determines that the thread has run its course. The GM will then announce a last call and the next week's digest will be the last in that series. It will either include the Guest Moderator's summary statement in it or the GM's summary statement will be distributed at a later date. All digests in the special Roundtable/Forum discussion will then be grouped together on its own page on the SHAKSPER website for public review. Hardy M.
