SHAKSPER 2006: SHAKSPER RoundTable Revisited
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 12/09/06
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 17.1083 Saturday, 9 December 2006 From: Hardy M. Cook <editor@shaksper.net> Date: Saturday, December 09, 2006 Subject: SHAKSPER RoundTable Revisited Dear SHAKSPEReans, This morning as an excuse to stay in bed for a while, I began to rethink my proposal for initiating a new feature to SHAKSPER, roundtable discussions. Below are my thoughts. I will consider responses and private e-mails to me and report back any significant results. Hardy ********** SHAKSPER RoundTable Focused Topic: Each topic will be of current academic interest to the discipline of Shakespeare or Early Modern Studies Guest Moderator: A Guest Moderator (GM) will responsible for initiating, moderating, directing, and concluding the discussions. Reading List: A Reading List of three to five items suggested by the Guest Moderator will be available on the SHAKSPER server for a limited time as if they were set aside in a reserved collection in a library. The readings will be announced at least two weeks before discussion begins and anyone participating will be expected to be thoroughly familiar with them. Digest of RoundTable Postings: Once a week, on Tuesdays, a digest of RoundTable postings (clearly identified as such to distinguish it from daily SHAKSPER discussions) will be distributed to the membership. The Guest Moderator will initiate the discussions with, for example, a question and will organize and comment on the week's submissions before suggesting the direction that discussions should follow the subsequent week. I, of course, will handle all of the technical aspects of forwarding contributions to the GM, of formatting the GM's digest, and of distributing it to the membership. The Guest Moderator will determine, announce, and conclude discussion of the topic. The final digest in a RoundTable thread will be the Guest Moderator's summary statement. After an interim, another RoundTable will begin. Other Features: The Guest Moderator's summary and, a list of links to the various digests in each RoundTable thread, to enable future readers to follow the discussions as they evolved, will be available in a separate section of the SHAKSPER server. Call for Discussion (CFD): Ideally, I would like anyone interesting in moderating a RoundTable to submit to me a Call for Discussion. Prospective moderators should provide a paragraph about themselves and interest in the topic. I believe that moderating a RoundTable could be an important adjunct to one's current research interests. Prospective moderators should send me a topic/title, a limited reading list, and a description of the proposed scope of the discussion. Final Thoughts: The idea of these RoundTables is to provide a forum for members to use the Internet in such a manner as to enable academic discourse in an alternative platform to conferences, journals, and such. Thus, RoundTable discussions will be conducted on a more formal level than ordinary list discussions: contributors will be expected to reflect upon their offerings for before submitting them and to be knowledgeable of the subject under discussion. Comments: All will regard all responses as private correspondence with me and will report back as necessary. It is highly possible that members will consider this a good idea but be unwilling to make a commitment to a new enterprise without knowing how much time or effort will be involved. I completely understand. But the idea intrigues me, and I just needed to field it one more time. FYI: I made the initial suggestion for SHAKSPER RoundTable discussions in July; I then posted two follow-ups with refinements about how I envisioned the Forum to work and a long-list of possible topics: http://www.shaksper.net/archives/2006/0606.html and http://www.shaksper.net/archives/2006/0628.html In this last post, I asked for anyone who might be interested to submit to me a 300 to 500 word proposal or call for discussion (CFD), suggesting possible areas of discussion and a question or statement to be used to initiate discussion for our first RoundTable, but I got no responses. Below are possible topics that have been suggested: * Historicism, New Historicism, Presentism: Where we are and where we are headed? * Performance Criticism: Thirty Years After * SHAKESPEARE'S LIVES to 1599: The Future of Shakespeare Biography * Electronic Shakespeares * New Uses for Old Books * Pedagogy: The Shakespeare Classroom Today * Alternative to the Research Paper in the Shakespeare Classroom * Realization of Text into Performance. * Editorial practices * Shakespearean (Early Modern) printing and publishing * Textual matters * The relevance of religion * Restoration and 18th- & 19th-century adaptations and interpretations * Shakespeare on film * Shakespeare's language * Family life in Shakespeare and his time * Historical approaches (e.g., related to law, politics, finance, etc.). * TV Shakespeare * Current Shakespeare Film Adaptations _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
