The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 17.1039 Wednesday, 22 November 2006 From: Peter Bridgman <peter@pfjb.freeserve.co.uk> Date: Wednesday, 22 Nov 2006 02:01:31 -0000 Subject: 17.1034 Shakespeare's Birthday Comment: Re: SHK 17.1034 Shakespeare's Birthday Thank you, Peter Farey. I stand corrected. The Stratford vicar who left, or was forced to leave, after the Northern Rebellion of 1569 couldn't have been Bretchgirlde, the man who baptised WS. However, the fact that the vicar who replaced Bracegirdle (it would be nice if we could give this fellow a name) kept the outlawed copes and vestments for so long suggests that he may also have been prepared to provide "old-style baptisms" for William's younger siblings. It's interesting that Honan and Greenblatt both assume Bretchgirdle was a staunch Protestant when and if, according to Wood, he performed these "old-style baptisms". While the type of ritual would not of course affect the date WS was born, it would greatly effect John and Mary's attitude towards the sacrament.
