Stratford's Town Council has approved a deal aimed at resurrecting the 
Shakespeare theater which has been shut down for nearly two decades.

The Town Council last night approved a contract with a New York 
developer, Koerner Kronenfeld Partners. The company is to renovate and 
reopen the theater.

There have been several attempts at reviving the theater over the years. 
  The state took over the property after the theater declared bankruptcy 
in 1982. State officials paid off the theater's one million debt and 
leased it to a nonprofit group that fared no better.

The theater closed in 1989.

STRATFORD - The Bard may finally be back in Stratford after a 20-year 
intermission.

The curtain could go up again at the long-shuttered Shakespeare theatre 
by the spring of 2008 under a contract with a New York developer 
approved late Monday by the Town Council.

The council unanimously approved the pact, despite emotional appeals by 
opponents to table the plan and consider other options they believe 
would be artistically and financially superior.

But council members on Tuesday strongly defended their decision to 
approve a negotiated agreement with Koerner Kronenfeld Partners, LLC, of 
New York City to renovate, reopen and operate the legendary Elm Street 
showcase.

"This is by far the strongest plan and has the best chance to succeed, 
and we have tremendous confidence in the KKP group to reopen the 
theater," said Town Council Chairman James Feehan, R-9.

"After all these years of talking it was time to take action," Feehan 
said. "What do we have to lose? The contract has built-in safeguards for 
the town that require KKP to meet specific goals by specific dates. If 
they don't do that, we can open the process again."

Feehan dismissed last-minute opposition to the proposal, including 
devotees of local director Louis Burke, who headed another group that 
failed to reopen the theater during the 1990s...

Under terms of the contract, once the pact is signed, KKP has 90 days to 
submit a final proposal outlining what needs to be done, and how much it 
will cost to renovate the theater. Then, the council will have 35 days 
to either accept, reject or ask for modifications to that plan. After 
that, KKP will have 90 days to raise the necessary capital...

Despite Burke's failed effort to reopen the theater during the 1990s, 
when his first group ran out of money, several residents insisted the 
theater will never reach its full potential, if open at all, under the 
KKP pact...
