SHAKSPER 2006: SHAKSPER: The Pump-Priming Edition

The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 17.0581 Wednesday, 21 June 2006 From: Hardy M. Cook <editor@shaksper.net> Date: Wednesday, June 21, 2006 Subject: SHAKSPER: The Pump-Priming Edition Dear SHAKSPEReans, Now, that appears that we are approaching my long-sought goal of raising the level of discourse on SHAKSPER, I would like to propose a possible new feature to the conference. In the early days of the list, Shakespeareans who taught in smaller, relatively isolated institutions around the world would often seek me out at conferences to thank me for providing them a kind of virtual faculty lounge, a sense of belonging to a community of scholars with whom they could share their thoughts and explore their ideas despite the comparative dearth of actual colleagues where they lived and worked. It has occurred to me that we might be more intentional about this aspect of our community and institute periodic topics to discuss amongst ourselves - a SHAKSPER Roundtable. Examples of such topics could be the following: * The State of the Discipline * Historicism, New Historicism, Presentism: Where are we and where are we going? * Performance Criticism: Thirty Years After * SHAKESPEARE'S LIVES to 1599: A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE: The Future of Shakespeare Biography I could probably go on for hours listing topics that I am interested in seeing discussed. I welcome your thoughts in private - I have no intention of making this a discussion thread itself. Let me know what you think of this idea. If you think it is a worthy one, offer some of your own topics. I will reflect on your responses and decide whether to pursue or drop this idea. Thanks and best wishes, Hardy _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
