The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 17.0542 Wednesday, 7 June 2006 From: Marcus Dahl <MarcusBlackHeart@spamarrest.com> Date: Wednesday, 7 Jun 2006 03:08:00 -0700 (PDT) Subject: 17.0535 A Roof on the Globe? Comment: Re: SHK 17.0535 A Roof on the Globe? Dear All, Saw Titus at the Globe last night. Very enjoyable production, second half (more Shakespeare) better than the first (more Peele?). Aaron the standout character in terms of performance, Titus good but overly shouty. Pie scene very funny, Lavinia a bit twee somehow and raised too many unintended laughs. Staging least important and irrelevant aspect. Made virtually no difference to my enjoyment so I would conclude that a bare stage with no overhead banners (or whatever they are called) would have worked just as well if not better (less distractions and more 'authentic'). Piped music also deeply irritating and distracting. Whenever the play worked best it was when the words came into your ears and awoke the emotions as they should. Piped 'mood' music and annoying stage craft just unnecessary distractions (if occasionally amusing - as with the moveable stages and 'camo' netting forest pit). The Globe still clearly the best theatre in UK for seeing early modern works - atmosphere and acoustics fantastic (apart from those damn propeller planes - surely they can divert their flightpath???). Plus you can bring your own food and drinks. Fantastic value for five pounds. Recommend to all.
