SHAKSPER 2005: Modern Bowdlerizations
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 12/06/05
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 16.2007 Tuesday, 6 December 2005 From: Carol Morley <carolamorley@hotmail.com> Date: Tuesday, 06 Dec 2005 10:12:23 +0000 Subject: 16.1953 Modern Bowdlerizations Comment: RE: SHK 16.1953 Modern Bowdlerizations In our second year at High School we read Macbeth. The teacher had obviously chosen a mildly censored (Porterless) version but unfortunately failed to check whether or not the character would actually be included in the local amateur production we all trooped off to see. He was. Modern dress, entering through the auditorium trouserless and reeling, urine-jokes intact and a ripe Glaswegian accept redolent of even more obscenity than Shakespeare wrote for him... the actor must have enjoyed the massive shock-reaction he got from the thirty schoolgirls in the front stalls who thought he was a genuine intruder... but I have to say the rest of the play failed to live up to that entrance afterwards. _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
