SHAKSPER 2005: BBC TV Shakespeare Collection
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 12/02/05
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 16.1988 Friday, 2 December 2005 From: Jim Harmon <jim@jamesrharmon.com> Date: Thursday, 01 Dec 2005 17:58:24 -0600 Subject: BBC TV Shakespeare Collection Those of you interested in the BBC Shakespeare productions might like to know that "The BBC TV Shakespeare Collection" is available at Amazon.uk. Its description may be found at: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000B6F8V4/qid=1133479491/sr=1-1/re f=sr_1_10_1/203-1569880-7092751 While its price is given as £149.99, I'm almost certain that its listed price when I ordered it on 11/27 was £139.99; its non-VAT price to me when I actually placed my order was £119.14. After the exchange rate, my cost was US$209.26. Shipping by Air was £8.03; however, I ordered it with 5 other DVDs/boxed sets. They were delivered to me in Arkansas by DHL on 11/30. A reviewer of the collection on the amazon.uk site notes his disappointment with the quality of the box that holds the DVDs; however, my set arrived in excellent condition. The DVDs themselves are housed in slim cases. As noted in the amazon.uk description, the DVD set is Region 2. To play it (and other non-Region 1 DVDs), I use an Oppo DV971H DVD player, which can be made region-free by means of a "secret" menu. I am certainly no audiophile/videophile, but I first learned of this DVD player at AVS Forum, where it is highly regarded, especially in light of its relatively low price. Threads (very long ones) about this DVD player may be found at: Oppo DV971H FAQ / Brain Dump http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=491306&page=1&pp=30 and Oppo DV971H Faroudja DCDi http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=482239&page=1&pp=30 The player may be purchased (US$199.99) from Amazon (USA) at: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00078GLJY/ref=sr_11_1/102-7771530-4849706?%5Fencoding=UTF8 or directly from Oppo Digital (US$199.00) at: http://www.oppodigital.com/ Oppo is held in high esteem by AVS Forum members for its high level of customer support, which has included frequent firmware updates for this player, in response to comments and suggestions by AVS Forum members. Of course, I have not had time to watch any of the DVDs, other than to verify that the OPPO DVD player played the one DVD I tried. I hope this information is of use to my fellow SHAKSPERians. Best wishes, Jim Harmon [Editor's Note: I sure spent a lot more for the complete set the last time it was offered on DVD. This price is so good I feel I ought to buy another set as a backup. I also noted on the Amazon page that the Nicol Williamson Hamlet is due out on DVD in January.] _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
