To use the idiom of Britain's youth, Globe Education doesn't 'do' irony
and a year or two ago it was certainly planning to have handkerchiefs
made by Southwark schoolchildren sewn together as a symbol of
cross-cultural reconciliation. The inspiration was, as the piece says,
the strawberry-spotted handkerchief in Othello. In one of the planning
meetings ("everyone brainstorm! think aloud!") I recall the stony
silence that followed my observation that the strawberry decoration
perhaps represented menstrual blood, in which case the more appropriate
napkin were . . . Some thoughts are better kept to oneself.
