The only thing I've read in the newspaper so far was that an actor
knocked over a burning candle. "An investigation is underway."
Interestingly, the production was not identified as Hamlet.

All news blamed the incident on a candle flame that fell on the carpet.
In my earlier post I said few died; now the death toll stands at 43.
What a tragedy!

As the New York times of Sept. 6 had it,

BENI SUEF, Egypt, Sept 6 (Reuters) - A candle fell over and set fire to
a crowded theatre in the south Egyptian town of Beni Suef on Monday
night, killing 31 people and seriously burning 16 others, police and
hospital sources said on Tuesday.

The candle, a prop in the play "Hamlet" at an experimental theatre
festival in the town 100 km (60 miles) south of Cairo, set fire to
carpeting and spread rapidly to the rest of the building, survivors of
the blaze said.
