Why is Hamlet a tragedy? He would not be a tragic hero were it not for
some admirable quality he had that was somehow the vehicle of his
undoing. When he tells Horatio to stick around and tell his story, what
is the story he wants told? Might it have something to do with his own
ideals for himself (not discluding his love for Ophelia) being
progressively compromised by events, not only external but internal to
himself? The admirable quality a determination to lead a life that is
free and able to make inquiry and to love, and that prospect is dashed
almost from the first scene. Best, S
