Al Margary's listing of alternative quarto titles etc is only confirmation of the fact that titles are rather subjective and subject to rhetorical use. Anyone who has ever looked at Henslowe's Diary will be aware that debate still rages about exactly which texts Henslowe refers to in his diary (both those with Shakespearean titles - Shrew, Hamlet, Harey vj etc) and those not. Henslowe is notoriously vague. Given the fact that Gary Taylor famously used the Q1 title of 1HVI (rather than the Folio title) in his re-branded Oxford ed. of the Shakespeare Works - it will be apparent that titles have rhetorical value which is not necessarily rendered more 'objective' by either precedence of use, nature of argument (pro or against Shakespearean authorship) or textual origin (Folio or Quarto). I say that at least '1RichII' is clear and has textual precedent, whereas 'Woodstock' is editorially later and rather misleading. Again I re-iterate - which play does Al read? 'Twelfe Night' or 'What You Will'? All best, Marcus [2]------------------------------------------------------------- From: Martin Steward <martinsteward@ntlworld.com> Date: Thursday, 1 Sep 2005 11:30:31 +0100 Subject: Wager Comment: SHK 16.1429 Wager The suggested procedure has been abandoned, but the rest of the list ought still to be able to have their fun. My vote goes to Ward Elliott. Anyone else prepared to contribute to the survey? m _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
