I'm not so sure they would. With Elizabeth waning and Burleigh now gone,
the succession question was far from clear. The question of Elizabeth's
bastardy still lingered. Even Essex thought he had a shot at the throne.
And with the Catholics plotting and scheming at every turn, I actually
wonder whether the 'fin de siecle' Elizabethans might have thought it
was all par for the course? Just a thought.
