SHAKSPER 2005: A Claudius Question
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 02/17/05
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 16.0326 Thursday, 17 February 2005 From: Colin Cox <colin@willandcompany.com> Date: Wednesday, 16 Feb 2005 16:42:18 -0800 Subject: 16.0314 A Claudius Question Comment: Re: SHK 16.0314 A Claudius Question >An Elizabethan audience, whether lettered or not, would have regarded >the crowning of Claudius as extraordinary. I'm not so sure they would. With Elizabeth waning and Burleigh now gone, the succession question was far from clear. The question of Elizabeth's bastardy still lingered. Even Essex thought he had a shot at the throne. And with the Catholics plotting and scheming at every turn, I actually wonder whether the 'fin de siecle' Elizabethans might have thought it was all par for the course? Just a thought.
