From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 01/26/05
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 16.0153 Wednesday, 26 January 2005 From: Peter Bridgman <peter@pfjb.freeserve.co.uk> Date: Tuesday, 25 Jan 2005 15:30:07 -0000 Subject: 16.0138 Date of King John Comment: Re: SHK 16.0138 Date of King John Steve Sohmer asks ... >Can anyone tell me the latest received opinion -- and supply a reference >-- re the date of King John? No one knows. Ernst Honigmann suggests 1590, his theory being that 'The Troublesome Raigne of King John of England' (1591), a rabidly anti-Catholic version, probably written by spy Anthony Munday, was a reaction to Shakespeare's play. Other scholars have suggested 1591, i.e. that WS's play was a reaction to 'The Troublesome Raigne'.
