SHAKSPER 2005: "Hamlet" Questions
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 01/20/05
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 16.0114 Thursday, 20 January 2005 From: Scot Zarela <goscot@envirocitizen.com> Date: Wednesday, 19 Jan 2005 10:08:22 -0800 Subject: "Hamlet" Questions Comment: SHK 16.0075 "Hamlet" Questions To Terence Hawkes: Thanks for the explanation; I'm glad you know what Eliot meant. I hope you also understand that I was talking about something else: not whether an audience recognizes poetry as poetry in the moment of performance, but simply whether Hamlet could have written swatches of verse replete with matter, metrically regular and rhetorically apt. I think not, and suggested my reasons in SHK 16.0041 http://www.shaksper.net/archives/2005/0040.html and SHK 16.0029 http://www.shaksper.net/archives/2005/0028.html . Eliot's remark is interesting for a lot of reasons, but you sent it as if in reply to my argument, and I don't see the relevance.
