From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 12/27/04
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 15.2143 Monday, 27 December 2004 From: John Andrews <esuwdc@msn.com> Date: Tuesday, 21 Dec 2004 11:07:32 -0500 Subject: Programs with Harold Evans, Stephen Greenblatt, and F. Murray Abraham __________________________________ Sir Harold Evans Discusses "They Made America" Tuesday, January 4 Cash-Bar Reception 11:30 a.m., Lunch 12:30 p.m., Program 1:00 p.m. Member Rate $25 Non-Member Rate $30 Woman's National Democratic Club 1526 New Hampshire Avenue NW We're delighted to welcome the critically acclaimed authority behind a beautiful volume that is now being featured in a celebrated PBS series. They Made America is Sir Harold Evans' sequel to The American Century, a best-seller that was named Book of the Year by both the New York Times and Publishers Weekly. Before he and his wife, Tina Brown, moved to the United States, Sir Harold presided over the venerable Times of London. His was a reign of excellence that lasted for a decade and a half (1967-82), and it prompted his fellow journalists to honor him as Britain's most distinguished newspaper editor. From 1990 to 1997 Sir Harold served as president and publisher of Random House in New York, and between 1997 and 1999 he guided the editorial fortunes of such prominent magazines as The Atlantic Monthly and U.S. News & World Report. Sir Harold will provide highlights of an overview that conveys readers from the steam engine to the search engine. He'll profile such vivid personalities as Gary Kildall, who gave us the operating system that facilitated the personal computer, Estee Lauder, who founded a legendary cosmetics empire, and Ted Turner, who invented the 24-hour television news channel. Copies of They Made America will be available for purchase and inscription. ________________________________ Stephen Greenblatt Explores Shakespeare's Life Tuesday, January 11 Cash-Bar Reception 11:30 a.m., Lunch 12:30 p.m., Program 1:00 p.m. Member Rate $25 Non-Member Rate $30 Woman's National Democratic Club 1526 New Hampshire Avenue NW As the author of such influential studies as Sir Walter Raleigh (1970), Renaissance Self-Fashioning (1980), Shakespearean Negotiations (1988), Learning to Curse (1990), Marvelous Possessions (1991), Practicing New Historicism (2000), and Hamlet in Purgatory (2001), Stephen Greenblatt had already established himself as one of today's most widely recognized authorities on the Early Modern period before he produced his widely praised Norton Shakespeare anthology in 1997. It was anything but shocking, then, that when Dr. Greenblatt applied his vast learning and acute sensibility to Will in the World, a luminous biography of Shakespeare, the result would be a volume that has received enthusiastic notices in The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, NPR's Morning Edition, and a number of other media outlets. Nor is it astonishing that a work that has been lauded by such penetrating critics as Adam Gopnik received a coveted nomination in the nonfiction category for this year's National Book Award. After many fruitful years at the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Greenblatt is now a distinguished professor of the humanities at Harvard University. He'll be making a special trip to Washington to discuss and sign copies of his latest contribution to our understanding of the globe's most revered poet and dramatist. ________________________________ A Valentine Spotlight on F. Murray Abraham Monday, February 14 Program 7:00 p.m. Member Rate $20 Non-Member Rate $25 Corcoran Gallery of Art 500 17th Street NW F. Murray Abraham is best known, of course, for his portrayal of the envious Salieri in Amadeus (1984). For this indelible cinema he earned both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe trophy. He's also widely admired for the characters he's brought to life in The Name of the Rose (1986), Mighty Aphrodite (1995), and Finding Forrester (2000), not to mention his memorable parts in The Sunshine Boys (1975), All the President's Men (1976), Madman (1979), Scarface (1983), Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), Mobsters (1991), By the Sword (1993), Last Action Hero (1993), Nostradamus (1994), Surviving the Game (1994), Dillinger and Capone (1995), and Star Trek: Insurrection (1998). He'll soon be seen in two new feature films: The Bridge of San Luis Rey and Quietly Flows the Don. What Mr. Abraham's fans may be less familiar with are the dozens of stage protagonists he's depicted, among them Bottom, Creon, Cyrano, Iago, Lear, Macbeth, Malvolio, and Uncle Vanya. A few years ago he graced director Mike Nichols' celebrated revival of Waiting for Godot, a Samuel Beckett classic in which Mr. Abraham co-starred with such brilliant performers as Bill Irwin, Steve Martin, and Robin Williams. During a wide-ranging conversation with the ESU's John Andrews, he'll revisit the highlights of a richly varied career and offer some insights from his soon-to-be-published guide to performing Shakespeare. ________________________________ Reserving Space for ESU Events To obtain more information about any of the programs described above, and to make reservations for them, please send a message to esuwdc@msn.com (see link below) or call (202) 234-4602.
