SHAKSPER 2004: "Enter BRUTUS in his orchard"?
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 12/21/04
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 15.2137 Tuesday, 21 December 2004 From: Philip Weller <response@clicknotes.com> Date: Monday, 20 Dec 2004 12:48:27 -0800 Subject: "Enter BRUTUS in his orchard"? I'm working on an HTML edition of Julius Caesar (current address is http://www.clicknotes.com/Julius_Caesar/index.html) and ran into this opening stage direction for Act 2, Scene 1: "Enter BRUTUS in his orchard." The stage direction is from the First Folio, sole authority for the text of the play. My question is: Does this stage direction represent some stage practice, or is it only a reader's aid? If it's a reader's aid, are there other examples of such stage directions in the First Folio? -- Sincerely, Philip Weller Shakespeare Navigators http://www.clicknotes.com _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
