SHAKSPER 2004: Dates in Shakespeare
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 12/03/04
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 15.2046 Friday, 3 December 2004 From: Harry G. Rusche <enghr@LearnLink.Emory.Edu> Date: Thursday, 02 Dec 2004 13:14:52 -0500 Subject: Dates in Shakespeare A friend (a librarian) asked me about dates in Shakespeare. For example, we know that Juliet was born on July 31, we can look up the date of the Battle of Agincourt, and we can (perhaps) figure out Hamlet's age from the gravedigger's comments. He is concerned with other dates as well and asked me if I know of a source he could consult. I don't know of a source like that, but I told him the Arden Shakespeare has copious notes that help me answer questions of all sorts. Does anyone know what I might suggest to him? He is a librarian, so I suspect that it would be an obscure source if he cannot readily find the information. Or has anyone dealt with questions like this in any of the plays? If this is too specific to be of general interest, please reply to me personally. And thanks for your help.
