The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 15.2039 Thursday, 2 December 2004 From: Curt L. Tofteland <Tofter@aol.com> Date: Wednesday, 1 Dec 2004 06:43:23 EST Subject: Shakespeare Behind Bars Documentary Selected for 2005 Sundance Film Festival Philomath Films documentary about Shakespeare Behind Bars is one of 16 documentaries (out of 624 entries) to be selected for its world premiere at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival taking place January 20-30, 2005, in Park City, Utah. Shakespeare Behind Bars was created in 1995, by Curt L. Tofteland, the long time producing artistic director of Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, and co-founded with Dr. Julie Barto, staff psychologist, at the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex in LaGrange, KY. Shakespeare Behind Bars embraces restorative justice. The program was designed to allow the adult prison population an opportunity to examine relevant personal and social issues within the structure of an aesthetic experience. This drama-in-education approach offers participants the opportunity for 'safe' encounters with complex issues. This approach encourages the development of the interpersonal life skills that will contribute to the inmates successful reintegration into society. Shakespeare Behind is the only North American Shakespeare Company contained within the walls of a medium security adult male prison. The aesthetic approach to the work uses original practice techniques to produce full length productions using the First Folio with the male inmates playing all the roles. Philomath Film's 90 minute documentary follows the nine month process of bringing William Shakespeare's play, The Tempest, to performance. The Sundance Film Festival is the premier showcase for American independent film, is an important new platform for international independent film, and screens films that embody risk-taking, diversity, and aesthetic innovation. Over the last two decades, nonfiction films have taken hold of the hearts and minds of the American public. Documentaries have played an increasingly important role at the Sundance Film Festival and are screened on par with narrative films as one of the most recognizable sections of the Festival. Curt L.
