My university's Writing Across the Curriculum program involved getting
all departments who took part grading grammar, syntax, writing, etc.
Departments whose faculty did not feel at home doing this could enroll
their faculty in a tutorial taught by a writing instructor from our
Learning Center. (We were perhaps lucky in not having shop or gym),-- to
our surprise, our Business faculty already had in-service training in
grading writing,,,, Some departments, of course, refused to take part in
this, and some of them had enough clout to avoid administrative
pressure. But it sure beat the older method of doing nothing and them
complaining.

I don't personally believe in "letting them write untrammeled" -- just
go look at blogs to see the often messy, self-indulgent results.
