I've often wondered about Shakespeare roles using the following assumptions:

1. Shakespeare would have been able to choose a role that he wanted to
play, especially later in his career, and thus would have known, while
writing, which role was to be his.
2. Shakespeare would have taken smaller roles to leave time for writing.
3. Shakespeare would have taken especial interest and care in his own roles.

Therefore, if we could find small roles that were unusually complex in
their language or unusually important to the plot, all relative to other
smaller roles, those might be more likely to be Shakespeare's own.  I
don't know if there's a way to test this theory or not.
