Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm puzzled by John Briggs' comment,
though, given that it was an Anglican excommunication that the Quineys
actually got for marrying in Lent(which was observed in Jacobean
Anglicanism as much as in Catholicism). I'm not convinced by the
syphilis argument but I did wonder about some kind of heart condition.
None of the Shakespeare boys were long-lived; perhaps there was some
kind of family weakness..  I will look out for 'Herbal Bed', it sounds
fascinating. And my picture of Thomas Quiney does correspond with many
people's, it seems. He's proving to be an interesting, if unsavoury,
character to write.

Another question: were stories about the Shogun of Japan's court common
currency in London at that time, after the revelation of the adventures
of 'Samurai William' Adams in 1611? Does anyone know if anything was
written about it at the time?
