The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 15.1023 Friday, 7 May 2004 From: Richard Burt <rburt@english.ufl.edu> Date: Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:01:51 -0400 Subject: Julius Caesar in Mean Girls In the excellent recently released teen film Mean Girls, two classroom scenes involve Julius Caesar. In the first, the teacher quotes the line "Why, man, he doth bestride the narrow world Like a Colossus." There are also references to Romeo and Juliet on the blackboards. The shots are very short, so it's hard to make them out. Neither Shakespeare's name nor the play's title is mentioned. In a voice-over, the teacher says at the end of the scene. OK. Back to Caesar. In a later scene, one of the popular girls turns on the Queen Be by siding with Brutus and stating that it's time to stab Caesar (the dictator Queen Bee). The film is extremely well written, up there with Heathers. Whiteness and Africa come up frequently as issues. What Shakespeare has to do with them and vice versa is beyond me. _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
