Christopher Sly, supremely skunked in the first scene of The Taming of
the Shrew, begs, "For God's sake, a pot of small ale." Offered "a cup of
sack" instead, he protests that he "never drank sack in my life," and
then, "I do not sleep: I hear; I see; I speak;/ I smell sweet savors,
and I feel soft things: --/ Upon my life I am a lord indeed;/ And not a
tinker, nor Christophero Sly./Well, bring our lady hither to our
sight;/And once again a pot o' th' smallest ale." My eminent Shakespeare
professor Leonard Dean thought this was one of the funniest moments in
the corpus. If small ale made Mr. Sly this happy, I'd read that as his
author's enthusiastic endorsement of the product.
