Rare Hamlet Edition Expected to Fetch over £1 Million

A rare copy of William Shakespeare's Hamlet printed during the Bard's
lifetime is expected to fetch more than £1 million when it goes under
the hammer at a US auction house.

The copy, printed in 1611, is the earliest available version of the play
held by a private collector.

It is being sold as part of a wider collection from the Estate of Mary,
Viscountess Eccles at Christie's in New York later this month.

The complete Eccles collection offered for sale includes rare editions
of King Lear, Richard II, and Macbeth.

Also on sale is the first of a limited edition of an account of Queen
Elizabeth I's funeral, and one of only four recorded copies of Robert
Wilson the Elder's play The Three Ladies of London.

Lady Eccles assembled her collection over 60 years at Four Oaks Farm in
Somerville, New Jersey.

Christie's described the hoard as "one of the most exceptional private
collections of the past century".

In 2001, a first-folio edition of Hamlet sold for £3.4 million - an
auction record for Shakespeare and a world auction record for a 17th
Century book.

The sale is due to go ahead on April 14.
