The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 15.0665 Friday, 12 March 2004 From: Jack Heller <jackheller@kconline.com> Date: Thursday, 11 Mar 2004 10:52:26 -0500 (EST) Subject: 15.0646 "Beware March 15!" but No Fear Shakespeare Comment: Re: SHK 15.0646 "Beware March 15!" but No Fear Shakespeare While I agree with the sentiments of others on this thread, does anyone suppose the wily students won't try to find such simplifications of the text? A question perhaps worth asking: When was the first "translation" of Chaucer in to current English? I no longer discourage students from using purchased notes, synopses, translations, or whatever else they can find. What I do require is their engagement with Middle English and Shakespeare's early modern English (including, occasionally, in original spelling) in the classroom and on the tests. Perhaps that is the most we can do anymore. I do hope directors are resisting "translations" for the staging of the plays.
