The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 15.0640 Tuesday, 9 March 2004 From: Marcus Dahl <marcus@blackheartstudios.co.uk> Date: Monday, 8 Mar 2004 13:14:58 -0000 Subject: 15.0631 Full Title of the Plays of Shakespeare Comment: RE: SHK 15.0631 Full Title of the Plays of Shakespeare This is an interesting question. Try Gary Taylor for example on 'The First Part of Henry the Sixth' (which he and many others regard as having been written after 2HVI and 3HVI) and thus correlates on the stationer's register as 3HVI. The question becomes more tricky when you ask whether Shakespeare wrote a play called 'The First Part of the Contention' or a play called 'The Second Part of Henry The Sixth' (as it is in the 1623 Folio not the 1594 Quarto) and can only really be settled depending on how you view the chronological sequence of the plays' authorship. The trouble is heightened when you add that entries in Henslowe's Diary of other Shakespearean sounding texts are common - e.g. is Lear 'Leir' or 'Henry V' the Famous Victories, is Titus and Ondronicus 'Titus Andronicus' etc. Amusing but as far as I know not particularly resolvable without other unarguable evidence. Personally I think Shakespeare didn't care much about it as long as the play was performed and he was paid. Sorry to spread doubt...
