I know that the Shakespeare Theatre of the Nation's Capital did a
one-evening Henry IV a few years back, but I don't know the exact year,
or whether it is available in the Washington Performing Arts Video
Archive or not. I did not see the production, unfortunately.
Next time I am at the theatre, I will find out which year it was done.
Sorry I can't be more specific.

The 1990-91 season at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis included
Richard II, the two parts of Henry IV combined into one play, and Henry
V. Since this is a repertory company, the same actor who played Hal
later played Henry V, etc. Generally the three plays alternated with
each other, but there were a few weekends when one could see all three.
Obviously combining the two Henry IV plays into one meant that a lot was
cut, but it worked very well.

For Brooke Morrill,
Peter Hall, John Barton, and Clifford Williams directed a "Wars of the
Roses" cycle that included the plays for the RSC in 1964; Michael
Pennington and Michael Bogdanov directed a "Wars of the Roses" that
included them for the English Shakespeare Co. in 1986-87 or so. Check
out the volumes in Manchester U P's Shakespeare in Performance series --
Scott McMillan authored the one on *1H4* and Barbara Hodgdon authored
the one on *2H4*.

R. Christ Reeder's adaptation The Wars of the Roses includes 1 and 2
Henry IV. It will be playing at the Cincinnati Shakespeare Festival
April 22-25.

This combining of 2 parts has been done many times, some of these cited
in our Cambridge edition of Part One. The Manitoba Theatre Centre in
Winnipeg has a good script of its production in the 90s. One great loss
is any closure to Part One that deserves more than an interval.
Cheers,
Herb
