SHAKSPER 2004: "Would Shakespeare Get Into Swarthmore?"
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 02/02/04
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 15.0282 Monday, 2 February 2004 From: Ken Steele <ken@steele.ca> Date: Friday, 30 Jan 2004 10:14:58 -0600 Subject: 15.0266 "Would Shakespeare Get Into Swarthmore?" Comment: Re: SHK 15.0266 "Would Shakespeare Get Into Swarthmore?" Would Shakespeare pass an entrance exam? Somehow, with his apparent impatience for pedantry (see Love's Labours Lost among others), I rather doubt it. I also doubt that he would WANT to. The one thing I am certain of, after studying Shakespeare for about a decade at university myself, is that if Shakespeare DID enrol, the daily grind of academic rigour, self-analysis, footnoting, peer review, grading and correction would almost certainly crush every ounce of creative life out of his writing. Send Shakespeare to college and you probably get -- Samuel Johnson?
