Hugh Grady defines our work as follows:

 >A short, on the fly answer to a very good (if much discussed)

question:

 >when we interpret literary texts, we are helping to make culture in a
 >complex social process.

Maybe we are, but we are also responding to another voice, making the
dead letter speak and giving it voice. Criticism -- though less than
teaching -- allows us the opportunity to escape the solipsism which is
damnation itself.

Cheers,
Sean.
