SHAKSPER 2003: Names in Ant.
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 12/29/03
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 14.2439 Monday, 29 December 2003 From: John Velz <jvelz@ccwf.cc.utexas.edu> Date: Saturday, 27 Dec 2003 01:13:06 -0600 Subject: Names in Ant. In re 14.2427. Tanner, Jeri. "The Power of Names in Shakespeare's 'Antony and Cleopatra'." Names 35 (1987): 164-74. Mnch. 7/02. The focus is heavily on Antony and on Cleopatra. There is an apparent blunder when Tanner omits the derivation of Antony's nomen given in the first sentence of Plutarch's"Life of Antonius". But there is much to praise in this art., esp. the probable implications of terms of address for characters present or absent. Superstition and tradition have a major role to play. Ahaenobarbus is literally brazen beard but that is misleading; better to translate it redbeard. Cf. Ashley and Hanefin in this section; Tanner makes prominent use of this reference. [Mnch means that I saw it at the ShakespeareBibliothek Universitaet Muenchen.] Hope this helps.
