SHAKSPER 2003: Shaksper Hornbook 101: Reading assignment
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 12/19/03
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 14.2406 Friday, 19 December 2003 From: Rolland Banker <rollbank@yahoo.com> Date: Thursday, 18 Dec 2003 18:10:08 -0800 (PST) Subject: Shaksper Hornbook 101: Reading assignment A humble suggestion: For new members of the Shaksper list I would suggest going to the Shaksper search option and reading the thread on Julie Taymor's movie "Titus" back in November 2000, as an excellent intro into the intricacies and protocols of posting on this list. It's all there: Moderation, as well as immoderation, examples of forceful opinions (lettered and unlettered), Hollywood movie glamour, gloves off, horns out, informed, educated, yet touching on Pop culture habiliments, subtle and the not so subtle and all of it heartfelt. Opinions and bombast blow in as well as incisive cool breezes from various entrenched and detachable intellectual positions, all nuances are considered apparently; with posters in full rhetorical flight tickling the keyboards like a cyber-Paderewskis; each is soothing, chiding, clarifying the extenuating, -- according to their own dispositions. Even Hardy pipes in personally on occasion: "As one who has gone on record as claiming that Taymor's TITUS may be the finest Shakespeare FILM ever made and as one who has a strong aversion to making any claims about authorial intentions,...." And finally as things heat to a feverish pitch, many posters are charmingly found to be bandying about the Hardy name with apotropaion-like earnestness as they foretoken thoughts of final judgement in their posts. I tell you -- It doesn't get much better than that. At least Hardy never publicly declared to anyone yet (as far as I know, I'm still an ephebe here) in the words of Holofernes: Thou disputest like an infant: go, whip thy gig. Circum circa to All. _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
