The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 14.2393 Thursday, 18 December 2003 From: Holger Schott <hschott@fas.harvard.edu> Date: Thursday, 18 Dec 2003 02:54:48 -0500 Subject: 14.2383 Shakespeare as Literary Dramatist Comment: Re: SHK 14.2383 Shakespeare as Literary Dramatist Steve Roth: >No, not rights "over" another text in the modern sense, but the right to >enjoin a competitive text's publication. Sure -- hence my use of the phrase "certain rights." Although it's probably more accurate to say competitive _title_ rather than _text_, since the concern was clearly not that Shakespeare's _King John_ (say) was a better play, and people would therefore stop buying the old _Troublesome Reign_ , but simply that another King John play in print would damage the marketability of the older book. The example of this play, incidentally, is well known, but I'd be interested to know if Erne argues a similar case for any other folio-only early plays, such as _Comedy of Errors_?
