SHAKSPER 2003: Slings and Arrows
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 12/17/03
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 14.2389 Wednesday, 17 December 2003 From: Bill Arnold <barnold_pb@yahoo.com> Date: Tuesday, 16 Dec 2003 06:33:20 -0800 (PST) Subject: 14.2375 Slings and Arrows [and Outrageous Comment: Re: SHK 14.2375 Slings and Arrows [and Outrageous Misinformation!] Tanya Gough quotes WSMM [either Will Shakespeare Outrageous Misinformation or World Shocking Outrageous Misinformation, to wit: "The official site blurb is as follows: 'Directed by Peter Wellington (Joe's So Mean To Josephine), SLINGS AND ARROWS is based in the fictional town of New Burbage where legendary theatrical madman Geoffrey Tennant (Paul Gross) returns to the New Burbage Theatre Festival - the site of his greatest triumph and most humiliating failure, to assume the Artistic Directorship after the sudden death of his mentor, Oliver Welles. When Geoffrey arrives he finds that Oliver is still there, in spirit anyway, and with his guidance (and often in spite of it) Geoffrey attempts to reconcile with his past while wrestling the Festival back from the marketing department. Despite a bitter leading lady, a clueless leading man, and a scheming General Manager, he manages to stage a remarkable production of Hamlet; the play that drove him mad." Then Tanya writes, and I hope tongue-in-cheek, "It's still too soon to expect a DVD release, but we're keeping our eyes open for it." OK: we all do *not* get it, nor do we ever want to get it, *Outrageous Misinformation": Hamlet, a spiritless ghost, and madness! When will the world media get some help from SHAKSPEReans--hopefully!--and trash this media madness? Obviously, Shakespeare scholars have *not* been able to right the apple cart, after four centuries. Slings and Arrows, and Outrageous Misinformation! C'est la vie! C'est la morte!
