SHAKSPER 2003: Bad, bad quarto!
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 12/15/03
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 14.2358 Monday, 15 December 2003 From: Steve Roth <steve@steve-roth.com> Date: Sunday, 14 Dec 2003 09:01:41 -0800 Subject: Bad, bad quarto! Speaking of Greg-, Pollard-, and Duthie-bashing: In an effort to finally put an end to the impression of a stern voice and tightly rolled TLS that arises from the seemingly still-universal moniker, "'bad' quarto" (the inner quotes being now de rigeur), might I suggest that we henceforth use the term "short [tm] quarto" instead? It has been employed before, of course, but it's surprisingly rare, both in print and online. Google yields only a handful of instances, the most significant being by our own Steve Urkowitz, here in 1993: "short-quarto scripts." We've used "bad quarto" here more than 100 times over the same period. I'll leave it to another to count how many of those employed the "so-called" quotes. _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
