From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 12/15/03
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 14.2356 Monday, 15 December 2003 From: John F. Andrews <shakesguild@msn.com> Date: Friday, 12 Dec 2003 16:49:04 -0500 Subject: Speaking of Shakespeare with Actress Marian Seldes Speaking of Shakespeare With Actress Marian Seldes Monday, December 15, at 8 p.m. National Arts Club 15 Gramercy Park South New York, NY 10003 The Shakespeare Guild is pleased to announce that its next "Speaking" engagement will place the spotlight on actress Marian Seldes, who is currently appearing with Brian Murray in an enthusiastically received double-bill that is being described simply as "Beckett/Albee." Ms. Seldes made her Broadway debut in a 1947 Robert Whitehead "Medea" with Judith Anderson in the title role for a production directed by and co-starring John Gielgud as Jason. She'll have anecdotes to share about many of the luminaries with whom she's worked -- a cast list that includes Charlton Heston (for whom she portrayed Macbeth's formidable Lady), Kevin Kline (to whose Richard III she brought a brilliant Margaret), and Walter Matthau (whose Iago more than met his match in her fiery Emilia). Ms. Seldes will also discuss her work with such legends as Tullullah Bankhead, Richard Burton, Katherine Cornell, Hume Cronyn, Henry Fonda, Lillian Gish, Audrey Hepburn, Anthony Hopkins, George C. Scott, Jessica Tandy, and Shelley Winters -- not to mention the many actors she's helped train for the profession during her 24 years as a faculty member at Juilliard's drama division (an institution whose Seldes era is notable for such distinguished alumni as Christine Baranski, Patti LuPone, Christopher Reeve, Kevin Spacey, and Bradley Whitford). Our conversation with Ms. Seldes will be followed at 9:15 by a light dessert reception in the Club's beautiful lounge. To reserve in advance at the $15 Guild member rate, simply respond to this message. You may also attend at the $20 non-member rate, if you wish, and pay at the door. To reserve for drinks or dinner prior to the event, call 212 475-3424. John F.
