The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 14.2264 Monday, 1 December 2003 From: Al Magary <al@magary.com> Date: Friday, 28 Nov 2003 22:25:23 -0800 Subject: 14.2253 "Shakespeare-sacrificed" Comment: Re: SHK 14.2253 "Shakespeare-sacrificed" >A friend of mine points out that this is "one of Gillray's >most famous images"... Thanks, Martin Steward. Now knowing the name of the satirist, I Googled on "Gillray Shakespeare" and turned up the news that his print, "Shakespeare-sacrificed," can be seen in a current James Gillray exhibition at the Tate. (Too bad I am 8 time zones away.) At the webpage, http://www.tate.org.uk/britain/exhibitions/gillray/shakespr.htm you can click on parts of the image to learn the background. Eg, "This figure, who is fanning the flames of the pile of burning copies of Shakespeare's plays, is a parody of the Fool from Benjamin West's painting of King Lear" and the more ironic note about the figure of Bottom, "as he was painted by Henry Fuseli. Fuseli's painting was commissioned by John Boydell for his Shakespeare Gallery; it is now in the Tate Collection."
