SHAKSPER 2003: Shakespeare's Will
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 12/01/03
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 14.2258 Monday, 1 December 2003 From: Al Magary <al@magary.com> Date: Monday, 1 Dec 2003 02:34:49 -0800 Subject: Shakespeare's Will The Public Record Office's Documents Online site offers a nice color PDF of Shakespeare's three-page will: http://www.documentsonline.pro.gov.uk/shakespeare.pdf In Acrobat Reader you can zoom to about 400% before resolution gets too fuzzy. BTW you can now access the one million wills proved 1384-1858 by the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, which handled "the relatively wealthy individuals living mainly in the south of England and most of Wales (what was originally the ecclesiastical province of Canterbury)." You can search the index (free), by first and last name, place, occupation, and date. These "PCC wills" can be scanned on demand for online viewing--a mere £10 to request an estimate and get a scan of one page. http://www.documentsonline.pro.gov.uk/wills.asp The PRO merged earlier this year with the Historical Manuscripts Commission to form the National Archives.
