Holland <pholland@nd.edu> Date: Tuesday, 18 Nov 2003 12:47:04 -0500 Subject: 14.2188 1H4 Actor's Part MS Online Comment: Re: SHK 14.2188 1H4 Actor's Part MS Online It's wonderful to have the facsimile of this leaf available. But, just to be clear, it is not an actor's part or anything similar for part of Shakespeare's play. Instead it is some 57 lines of verse from an unknown play, a scene that is in some sense a possible analogue to the Gad's Hill robbery in 1H4, though it may easily derive from a pre-Shakespearean version of the scene. The manuscript was described by Arthur Freeman in 'The "Tapster Manuscript": an analogue of Shakespeare's Henry the Fourth, Part One' in English Manuscript Studies 1100-1700, 6 (1997), pp.93-105 and also, briefly, by David Scott Kastan in his Arden 3rd series edition of Shakespeare's play (2002), pp.352-3. _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
