SHAKSPER 2003: "Fortinbras attacks Elsinore, I think not..."
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 10/06/03
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 14.1944 Monday, 6 October 2003 From: Jay Feldman <JFEL873@aol.com> Date: Saturday, 4 Oct 2003 20:54:39 EDT Subject: "Fortinbras attacks Elsinore, I think not..." I've been following the above subject at the Savage Shakespeare forum on the appropriateness of Fortinbras's military assault on Elsinore at the end of Branagh's Hamlet. You can view the entire discussion at: http://www.savageshakespeare.com/cgi-local/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=read_count&om=1342&forum=DCForumID1&omm=0&auto_sense=on A number of interesting questions and responses emerged in the give and take, but no final agreement. I am curious if anyone cares to contribute their theory on Fortinbras's hostile intent. Specific unresolved questions included: Did Fortinbras truly follow his uncle's cease and desist order? If Fortinbras invades Denmark, why after rather than before Poland? Why did Hamlet nominate Fortinbras for Denmark's crown? What were Fortinbras's "rights of memory" of 5.2? Did Shakespeare lose interest in Fortinbras after act one and replace him with Laertes? Thanks in advance - Jay Feldman _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
